Take Me Home Country Roads - cowritten with Bill Danoff - was Denver's first Top 10 single as a solo singer after a brief period in small folk ensembles. Danoff composed the track in conjunction with Johnny Cash in mind but after Denver heard an early version he knew right away it was destined to be an instant hit. The singer recorded the song within a couple of days when he performed it in front of an enthusiastic audience in Washington D.C.
